Household food waste calculator
Break a weekly estimate into food categories, then see the monthly, annual, and per-person picture.
What gets discarded?
Use receipts or a one-week audit. Enter zero for categories you do not track.
$0 per month - $0 per person each year
Largest entered category: None enteredsum of weekly category estimates x 52 = annual estimateThis is a planning estimate based entirely on your inputs. It does not measure weight, nutrition, greenhouse-gas impact, or unavoidable scraps.
Estimate from observed behavior
- Record discarded food for one typical week.
- Use purchase prices or reasonable receipt-based estimates.
- Change one pattern and compare again later.
Hypothetical example (2-person household): enter Produce $8, Leftovers $4, Dairy $2, Bread & grains $1, Meat & seafood $0, and Other $1 for one week. The weekly total is $8 + $4 + $2 + $1 + $0 + $1 = $16. The calculator multiplies $16 by 4.33 for a $69.28 monthly estimate (shown as $69), and by 52 for an $832 annual estimate. It divides $832 by 2 people to show $416 per person per year. These figures assume the entered week is typical and that category amounts represent the replacement cost of discarded food; they are planning estimates, not measured weight, nutrition, emissions, or a safety result.
